Dr. Terry Carter is an Assistant Professor of English in the English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts Department at Southern Polytechnic State University. He completed his doctoral work in English with an emphasis in composition and rhetoric at The University of South Carolina (USC) in 2002; his dissertation is entitled Textual and Personal Representations of African Americans in Composition and Rhetoric.From 1998-2002, he was a fellowship recipient in USC's African American Professors Program, a program that emphasizes and facilitates mentoring between African American doctoral candidates and their faculty advisors; he is also a 2001 recipient of the Conference on College Composition and Communication's (CCCC) Scholars for the Dream Travel Award. At Southern Polytechnic State University, he teaches first-year composition and a writer's workshop course; he also teaches an online composition course through The University of Georgia's collaborative programs. He is currently a member of CCCC's Language Policy Committee, and his research investigates representations of African Americans in the field of composition and rhetoric and how online composition courses impact student's writing and identity. Dr. Carter resides in Atlanta, Georgia, but frequently visits his family and friends in Columbia, South Carolina.
